ST. PETERS, Mo. (KSDK) – A St. Peters attorney has gone missing, leaving dozens of clients in limbo.

Jeffrey Witt is best known for helping break the case of the Clayton garage bombing back in 2008. But neighboring business people say Witt’s office has been empty since late October.

Witt was representing nearly 60 clients at the time he disappeared. Many of those people have shown up to his office looking for answers.

“He’s always been dependable. He’s helped me out with a few cases and I just hope he’s okay,” said former client Christine Richards.

In October, Witt was arrested by Clayton police for driving under the influence. His court date was set for November 20th. Two days later, his ex-wife filed a missing persons report with St. Louis County police.

Also on November 20th the Missouri Supreme Court suspended Witt’s law practice indefinitely. The order cites professional misconduct and posing a “Substantial threat of irreparable harm to the public.”

Things seemed hopeless for former clients who couldn’t get access to their legal records until Wednesday, when a letter appeared on the front door saying a new attorney has been chosen to take over Witt’s cases.

Kenneth Carp was appointed by a court to either represent Witt’s former clients or return any legal documents found at Witt’s office. You can contact Carp by calling 636-947-3600.

Carp says in Missouri attorneys are required to put retainer fees into a trust account. Attorneys are not supposed to access that money until services are rendered. Right now Carp is working to gather bank statements to verify whether any retainer money was left in Witt’s account.

News Channel 5 attempted to contact Witt. His website is still active, but the phone number is disconnected. When we checked his last-known address people there said they’d never heard of Witt.
